Automatic Recirculation Control valve(ARV) is a multi-function valve designed to protect centrifugal pumps from damage at low-flow conditions. It ensures that the pump always operates above its minimum continuous safe flow by automatically recirculating fluid back to the source or a tank when the process demand drops.
Unlike using a combination of a check valve, flow meter, and control valve, the ARV valve integrates all these functions into one compact unit.
Working Principle of Automatic Recirculation Control valve(ARV)
The ARV valve operates automatically without external power or control signals:Normal / Full Flow Condition
Process demand is high.
Pump discharge flows directly to the process line.
Bypass line is closed.
Reduced Flow Condition
As flow to the process decreases, the ARC valve senses it.
The valve gradually opens the bypass line, allowing some flow to recirculate back to the tank or pump suction.
This ensures the pump still gets its minimum required flow.
No Flow Condition
If the process line closes fully (zero demand), the ARV valve automatically opens the bypass completely.
The entire pump discharge recirculates to maintain safe pump operation and prevent overheating, cavitation, or vibration.
Advantages of Automatic Recirculation Control valve(ARV)
Pump Protection – Prevents overheating, cavitation, or mechanical failure from low-flow operation.
Automatic Operation – No need for electrical or external control systems.
Multi-Function – Combines check valve, flow sensing, and recirculation control into one unit.
Compact Design – Saves space compared to separate control setups.
Reliability – Mechanical or pilot-operated design ensures dependable performance even in harsh conditions.
Energy Saving – Opens bypass only when necessary, reducing unnecessary recirculation.
Applications of Automatic Recirculation Control valve(ARV)
ARV valves are widely used wherever centrifugal pumps operate under varying flow conditions:
Power Plants – Boiler feedwater pumps, condensate pumps.
Petrochemical & Refinery – Hydrocarbon feed pumps, process circulation pumps.
Chemical Industry – Pumps handling corrosive or hazardous fluids.
Water Treatment – High-pressure water pumps, desalination plants.
Paper & Pulp Industry – Process pumps requiring continuous protection.
